Life in the post birth days and weeks can be overwhelming. Hormones and sleep deprivation can take their toll. Your baby appears to be nocturnal! Sleeping all day and waking all night. The crying can make everyone distraught but you can be at a loss as to how to settle and soothe the baby.

You need to heal, you need to recover, you need energy. You NEED sleep!

It is possible to guide your baby into good sleep habits from day one. Gently working with the baby, I introduce a simple, manageable structure and demonstrate settling techniques to maximise sleep for everyone (taking into consideration the baby’s age, weight, nature and ability) enabling the baby to thrive and the mother to recover from the birth.

Whether you are experiencing severe “baby blues” or full-blown depression or psychosis, I can offer gentle support for the mother and help tend to the needs of the baby while you recover.

My aim is to work with you to give you the balance of support that you need.  Everyone’s needs are different. I’m there not to take over but to help you manage day to day, night to night.

There are many voices surrounding the best way to feed your baby and many people have strong opinions.

- Exclusive breast feeding.
- Expressing breast milk. What pumps work most successfully and suit your preferences.
- Combination feeding: breast and bottle (expressed or formula) and nipple confusion.
- Choosing a formula that will suit your baby and your preferences.
- Choosing a bottle - which make/design for your baby.

However you decide to feed your baby, I will support you to succeed and guide you into a positive experience for you and your baby. I also demonstrate settling and soothing techniques and help you to establish gentle feeding routines and structure for your day to enable your baby to thrive and you to rest.

I can guide and support you to create strategies to stabilise the condition and enable your baby to flourish, managing those intense times and enable you to feel more in control.

It’s hard enough adjusting to life with a newborn baby but when a baby has colic or reflux the stresses and anxieties are escalated often to an unmanageable level.

While it’s normal for babies to bring up a bit of milk after a feed babies with reflux are particularly sensitive. All babies cry but babies with colic can be inconsolable, distressing then whole household. Your vision of bringing home a smiley, happy, contented baby, playing on a playmat and sleeping soundly at sleep times, is shattered.

Your baby may or may not need medical help but as a maternity nurse, night nanny and baby consultant, I can certainly support and guide you to manage your babies needs through those difficult weeks, offering suggestions by drawing on my experience with other babies, that will ease the pain, the crying and help with the feeding so that your baby can flourish. I can give you the assistance you need (including a good night’s sleep!) for your own post birth recovery and for you and your family to enjoy your new baby and adjust to life post birth.

Routines and structure lead to a happy baby. A happy baby leads to a happy family. Babies thrive within a  routine, secure in the knowledge that all their needs will be met.  Routines work and are achievable for twins and triplets too!

Even when there are additional problems like reflux or colic, routine is possible. There is no one rigid routine to suggest.  Following observation of your baby and the day-to-day needs of your family life, I help you develop a manageable routine that meets the needs of your baby at the optimum times. The aim is to create a balance to your baby’s day, establishing regular feed times and sleep opportunities that enable your baby to flourish within the context of the needs of the wider family.
